Celebrities with Braces — Shiny Smiles on the Red Carpet

There has been no shortage of celebrities with braces. Although many stars had hardware in their teens or opted for the lower-profile Invisalign, adult celebrities with braces are plentiful. Many celebrities have decided to show off their shiny braces, with some even stating that they want to support their fans who have braces.

Braces vs. Invisalign — Making the Choice

The most significant difference between Invisalign and braces is the appearance. While Invisalign is nearly invisible tray aligners, braces are pretty visible with brackets and wires. Both can treat orthodontic problems, from minor orthodontic touch-ups to full-scale correction of severely misaligned teeth.

Most people have braces during their teen years. However, some people missed out on early orthodontic care. They are making corrections as adults for a variety of reasons. Many celebrities want to tidy up a slightly misaligned smile or close a gap between front teeth. Some stars also decide to keep their gap, using it as a trademark look.

The visibility of braces makes it surprising how many celebrities have chosen to show off traditional metal braces.

Celebrities with Braces — Who Wore Them Better?

We all know about Gwen Stefani. She always wanted braces as a kid, but her parents couldn’t afford them. At age 30, she proudly sported metal brackets and wires, smiling wide for the cameras! Miley Cyrus had braces while starring in the series “Hannah Montana.” She was still somewhat shy about it and opted for lingual braces, which weren’t readily noticeable.

Many stars have opted for Invisalign since its release in 1999. But even with the availability of the almost invisible tray aligners, some celebs have selected traditional braces. As they were in their teens, some had no choice, but if you have braces, you can rest assured that you aren’t the only one.

Famous Kids with Braces

Having a conversation about celebrities with braces doesn’t just mean talking about movie stars and singers.

When they were teens, both Prince William and Prince Harry sported metal braces. Before marrying Prince William, Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton straightened her royal smile with Invisalign.

Chelsea Clinton spent quite a bit of time growing up in the White House. That period included a stint in braces. On reflection, she told Seth Meyers on Late Night with Seth Meyers that it may not have been her best decision to beg her mom for orange and black elastics.

Sporting Braces in the Sports World

Plenty of people in the sports world have had braces too. When Dwight Howard was drafted into the NBA, he was only 18 years old. He accepted a position with the Orlando Magic while wearing braces, although he did have them removed before the preseason began.

Pro surfer Bethany Hamilton lost an arm to a shark attack and fought her way back to the top. The phenomenal athlete also wore braces to straighten her winning smile.

On the tennis court, Venus and Serena Williams reign supreme. Off the court, they were still teenagers wearing braces. Venus had some self-esteem issues because of the braces, but she conquered that hurdle. Serena had braces early in her career, then used Invisalign to touch up her smile later.

Singing the Steel Wire Blues

Extraordinary singer Beyoncé didn’t need much to make her smile perfect. She opted to wear braces in support of her young fans. She even stated that people with braces have “grins that win.”

Singer Estelle wanted braces when she was 20 years old but didn’t get them right away. A self-proclaimed wuss, she decided to take the leap when it was evident that she might be in contention for a Grammy Award. She stated that she wanted to stand at the podium and not be self-conscious about her smile.

Actors and Actresses and Braces — Oh My

Actor Tom Cruise used both clear braces and Invisalign. His tooth-straightening venture prompted 61-year-old actress Faye Dunaway to get braces. Now both have beautiful smiles!

Actor Nicolas Cage had braces when he was in his 40s. His treatment mainly went unnoticed because he only had them on his bottom teeth.

Reality TV star Kendall Jenner had braces when she was 13 years old. When she was 17, she used Invisalign to add the finishing touch. Khloe Kardashian also used Invisalign to touch up her already great smile.

Dakota Fanning has been gracing our movie screens since she was just seven years old. She had some pretty extensive dental needs but was excited about getting braces. Her treatment included expanders, headgear, and other complex treatments. She has an incredible smile as a result!

Harry Potter star Emma Watson wore braces for four months when she was 14. Her movie parents were orthodontists, but we don’t think they did the work.

Jaden Smith has always had his own style. That includes his stint in traditional braces when he was 11 years old. His sister Willow also wore braces when she was 12 years old. Neither was shy about showing off their shiny smile!

Fake Braces Make Appearances Too!

Although braces are not quite a fashion statement, they have made special appearances in TV and movies as props. In the TV series Ugly Betty with America Ferrara, the main character wears braces. They had considered installing braces for the pilot but went with a clip-in style retainer to simulate the braces. Ferrara never wore braces in real life but did have a retainer for a while.

Katy Perry used Invisalign in real life but donned full headgear and fake braces for  her music video, “Last Friday Night.”
